The Circle City Derby Girls’ Socialites traveled to Lebanon, Mo., for Midwest Derby Fest June 29-30. Following are highlights of each game.

CCDG vs. Springfield Battle Broads

The Socialites started off with a resounding 367-59 win against the Springfield (Mo.) Roller Girls’ Battle Broads in Circle City’s first game of the tournament. Circle City dominated the game from the starting whistle, earning lead jammer status in nearly every jam and demonstrating superior teamwork.

CCDG capitalized on several power jams, and even when both blockers were on the track, the Socialite blockers often kept the opposing jammer contained as jammers Vivi Section, The Killer Purple and Wicked Baum-Chele zipped through the pack again and again.

At the half, CCDG led 202-4. And in the second half, with a comfortable lead established, Circle City’s coaches mixed-up the traditional line-ups. Appearing on the jammer line – some for the first time in regulation play – were Spleana Rupture, Ionic Bondage, Devil Woman, Cherry Slapstick, Shock Hop and Albee ChooUp. The bout was Albee’s first as a Socialite.

Springfield blocker T Ann T executed a few powerful hits, taking advantage of opportunities to catch opposing blockers off-guard, and Thugz & Kissez set up some solid walls for the Battle Broads. But overall, the Socialites blockers were able stay together while keeping Springfield’s blockers apart.

CCDG vs. ICT Roller Girls

The ICT Roller Girls of Wichita, Kan., defeated the Socialites 160-99, in a game where, due to penalties, Circle City rarely fielded a full pack. In the first half alone, CCDG had 15 penalties while ICT had only five.

ICT’s blockers excelled at recycling to catch Circle City jammers, just as they had cleared the pack. And ICT’s jammers were able to capitalize on power jams to quickly run up the score in the first half.

Circle City blockers Devil Woman and Spleana Rupture set-up a few great picks for their jammers, immobilizing ICT blockers. But without a full pack, CCDG struggled to bust through ICT’s powerful defense.

CCDG vs. River Valley Roller Girls

On day two of the tournament, the Socialites seemed refreshed and focused as they started the day with a 107-56 win against the River Valley Roller Girls of Fort Smith, Ark.

CCDG kept River Valley from scoring for the first four jams, thanks to solid blocking and smart, conservative jamming. In the second half, River Valley was scoreless in the first seven jams, and Wicked Baum-Chele picked up 25 points in the fourth jam, increasing Circle City’s lead to 74-26.

Unlike the previous day’s match against ICT, in this game, the Socialites committed only nine penalties the entire game.

CCDG vs. Arch Rival Roller Girls Fleur Delinquents

Circle City’s second match-up of the day was against the Arch Rival Roller Girls’ Fleur Delinquents of St. Louis. After scoring nine points in the first two jams, Circle City scored no points in the next six jams, and ARRG edged ahead. But CCDG rallied and kept Arch Rival from scoring for the last eight jams of the 16-jam first period.

Both teams were penalty-heavy, with CCDG spending 45 total minutes in the penalty box and Arch Rival serving 34 minutes. But even with blockers in the penalty box, CCDG executed some great offensive plays, winning the game, 152-88.

CCDG vs. NWA Roller Derby

Circle City put up a great fight against NWA Roller Derby, of Fayetteville, Ark., but CCDG struggled to counter NWA’s brutal blocking and nimble jamming.

NWA capitalized on eight power jams in the first half to run up the score 94-17. In the second half, NWA’s blockers pummeled CCDG jammers, holding Circle City to only 13 additional points for a final score of 177-30.

In the second half, at least two CCDG skaters were injured, with Cherry Slapstick still nursing a broken finger from an earlier game. But the Socialites continued to play with tenacity and aggression, even after playing four previous games in two days.
