Marion, Ill. – The Circle City Derby Girls’ Socialites opened their fifth season on March 2 by bringing home a win to Indianapolis after dominating the Southern Illinois Roller Girls’ Power SIRG at The Pavilion in Marion, Illinois. The unranked Socialites took an early lead in the first jam, and the Power SIRG – who are ranked 34th in the North Central Region – were unable to score until the 7th jam of the bout. Quick footwork by their jammers and relentless positional blocking earned the Socialites an impressive 255-68 win over the Power SIRG.

Wicked Baum-Chele used her nimble footwork to quickly snag lead jammer status for the first jam of the bout to put 4 points on the board, while Socialite blockers Devil Woman, Lady Miss Bier, Nova Blaze, and Spleana Rupture prevented Southern Illinois’ jammer from scoring any points. Socialite jammer Vivi Section – who also took home Circle City’s MVP Jammer for the night after scoring more than 80 points – then took lead jammer status on the second jam and picked up another 13 points for Circle City. This pattern continued when Liberty Spykes won lead jammer in jam three and added another 15 points to Circle City’s score. Southern Illinois’ Power SIRG finally put 13 points on the board during two consecutive power jams, although Beattie Sedgwick’s vicious shoulder hits made it difficult for Power SIRG’s jammer to stay on her skates.

Even when Socialite jammer Vivi Section was sent to the penalty box, creating a power jam situation for Southern Illinois, the Power SIRG were still only able to score 4 points to Circle City’s 3. The Socialites’ Beattie Sedgwick, Ionic Bondage, and Spleana Rupture hammered Southern Illinois’s jammer with tenacious shoulder and hip hits, causing her to pass the star. Two jams later, Socialite Cassie Khaos proved that chaos doesn’t faze her when she fought her way through a mean Southern Illinois wall with the help of only two Circle City blockers, snagging 20 points for the Socialites.

Circle City jammers continued to take lead jammer status for most of the second half, and ultimately took lead jammer status for more than 70% of the entire bout’s jams. Fans witnessed even more fancy footwork when Wicked Baum-Chele hopped over an obstacle course of fallen Southern Illinois blockers. Power SIRG jammer Mean Mean Mississippi Queen fired the crowd up with some jammer-on-jammer action against lead jammer Cassie Khaos in the fourth jam of the second half, even before Mississippi Queen had made her initial pass through the pack. Socialite hard-hitter Ionic Bondage retaliated by sending Mississippi Queen to the floor, helping Cassie Khaos pick up 10 points.

While the Socialites’ agile and aggressive jammers kept Southern Illinois’ blockers on their toes, Socialites’ blockers also made it a rough night for the Power SIRG (four of whose players – Evilyn A. Heathen, Natalya Von Paine, Professor Plum Crazy, and Splatter – had just played in the opening bout of the evening’s doubleheader). Circle City’s Guiyatine Gretyl built formidable walls with teammates Spleana Rupture and Beattie Sedgwick, making it so difficult for Southern Illinois’ jammers to pass that they often chose to play defense against Circle City’s high-scoring jammers. Power SIRG jammers passed the star twice because of the Socialites’ relentless blocks and hits. After SIRG pivot AK47 Devin took the star from her jammer in the eleventh jam of the second half, Beattie Sedgwick’s continuous beatings prevented AK47 Devin from scoring any points against Circle City’s Liberty Spykes’ 14 points for that jam.

Many of Southern Illinois’ points came from power jams after Circle City jammers were sent to the penalty box, but even then the Socialites’ blockers proved to be more powerful than the power jam advantage. Near the end of the second period, Power SIRG’s Lethal Objection was the lone jammer on the track with only two Circle City blockers – Nova Blaze and Spleana Rupture – to hold her back. Their quick moves and positional blocking prevented her from breaking through until a no-pack situation was called.

This doubleheader opened the season for Circle City’s Socialites, kicking them off with a 1-0 record. Their next bout takes place in their home venue at The Forum in Fishers on Saturday, April 20, when Circle City’s Socialites and Party Crashers teams will take on Peoria Push Derby Dames’ Demolition Dames and Wrecking Crew teams.
